Raw Food Weight Loss |
We at SoyStache understand that one side effect of a natural raw food diet,
at least for the overweight,
is natural weight loss. Below is one such story.
SoyStache: A unique project promoting
an awareness of the many benefits of a plant-based (vegan) diet.

NOTE: On Wednesday October 15, 2008, Philip appeared on the CBS showThe Doctors to talk about his weight loss!
How It Started Imagine never knowing a time in your life when you were a normal weight… Practically overweight from birth; moving from the ranks of being overweight, to obese, to morbidly obese, and finally reaching a max weight of 400 lbs. Literally making over 30 different diet attempts, only to fail and gain back more weight back than I started with. Discouraging is hardly the word, it felt more like hopelessness. I knew I had to make a change fast when I started having serious problems breathing. I was always short of breath, and was winded walking up more than a dozen stairs. I was also dealing with serious acid reflux, which on occasion would go back into my throat while I was sleeping, clog my breathing, only to cause me to wake up unable to take a breath running around my room suffocating thinking I was going to die. I was also void of any and all additional energy. All my excess energy was being used to break down the large portions of food I was constantly medicating myself with. I use the word medicate because I was an emotional eater to the extreme. Whether it was depression, boredom, hopelessness, or even happiness… food became my answer. My daily routine after work consisted of eating fast food on my couch while watching 3 movies before I went to bed. Not much to live for, or so I thought. |
"I ended up losing 100 lbs the first year and I hadn’t
even really started exercising yet. It was amazing, wonderful,
exciting, and by far the best decision I had ever made in my life."
Bypassing Gastric Bypass I had heard about gastric bypass surgery and began to feel that might be my only hope. I went to the seminars that were held at the hospital and listened to the stories of the patients. Not all of them were as glowing as I would have expected, which got me kind of nervous. I began to hear people talk about throwing up, surgery complications, being able to only eat a handful of food, and even death. This was unexpected, and got me pretty nervous. I still went through a month of tests and physicals all to satisfy my insurance company, and finally got approved to have the surgery. When all was ready and in place for me to have the surgery I suddenly heard a still small voice inside me say, “don’t do it.” Feeling nervous about the operation already I decided to drop the whole idea and thought to myself there must be one other way to lose the weight that I must have missed. Enter – Raw Foods! I found out about the raw food lifestyle from a book series put out by freedomyou.com. They went into the raw food lifestyle, breaking away from the Standard American Diet, and even had information on fasting. From there I was hooked, and literally read every raw food book I could get my hands on. I had all the raw websites bookmarked and check them periodically… I couldn’t get enough. So I started cold turkey. One day I was eating the equivalent of a fast food Thanksgiving dinner at every meal, to the next day being 100% Raw Vegan. For me it was like a switch went off in my head. It said you no longer eat that type of food anymore, only this kind. My transition was pretty easy, and I was surprised how I didn’t miss the old cooked food, but actually desired fresh fruits and veggies. In the beginning I wasn’t a skimpy eater either. I was eating 2-3 avocados a day in my monster salads, with 8 or more handfuls of nuts. I was getting in enough fats for the week in one day, but the fat just kept coming off all the same. I ended up losing 100 lbs the first year and I hadn’t even really started exercising yet. It was amazing, wonderful, exciting, and by far the best decision I had ever made in my life. |
Full Body Detox Besides my shrinking waistline, I also noticed beautiful emotional and mental changes taking place. Eating cooked and processed foods buries your emotions. Whenever I felt an emotion I had to deal with, I would eat. That would numb the emotion and constantly keep me in drugged state of being so to speak. When you switch to eating raw foods you discover that you aren’t eating those types of heavy foods anymore, and you give your emotions an opportunity to rise to the surface and be dealt with once and for all. Along with clearing up emotional issues from the past, I also began to experience a mental clarity that I didn’t know was possible. Ideas and thoughts flowed through me, and juggling many projects at once became a simple task. I also started to see myself in a different light as well. I began to experience self-confidence and an empowerment I didn’t know existed. I began to take responsibility for my actions, and started living on purpose. I also started to see through the veil of hopelessness and realized that it was only an illusion, and that only grace and love was in my future. I continued to lose more weight, totaling 133 lbs lost so far, in 1.5 years. Every thing in my life is different now. From happiness, joy, relationships, job, priorities, green consciousness, exercise, spirituality, abundance, love… everything. My diet has changed over time as well and I now enjoy small meals, and only eat when I am hungry. I no longer live by mans dinner bell, but my own internal clock… and it feels great! |
"I knew my body was fully capably of healing
and correcting itself, if only I gave it the chance."
Taking Responsibility I decided to make a commitment from then on that I was going to take responsibility for my own health. No longer relying on so called quick fixes (that never fix anything) like frozen meals, diet pills, fad diets, but focus on learning to love myself enough to desire to be healthy. I knew my body was fully capably of healing and correcting itself, if only I gave it the chance. Once I really began to love myself internally, for who I was, right where I was at, I found that the change automatically manifested itself externally through my body correcting its own weight and improved health by leaps and bounds. Now is my time for change, and now is your time as well! If you are struggling with yet another diet, or unhealthy living, I encourage you to embrace the raw food lifestyle and watch your beautiful wonderful world unfold right in front of you.
