From: Kipper Lance goes vegan, and has never felt better

Raw. Vegan. Uncooked.

These are dirty words to people who savor their sirloin and can't imagine life without fish or chicken.

But when you vow not to eat anything with a mother, that severely limits your food options. It also opens up a healthy world where your energy level soars and your body weight plummets.

From: Business owner lauds nutrients of raw food

"The problem with the American diet is that we're eating too much processed and refined food filled with chemicals. That's not the way our ancestors ate," said Hubbs, who is also owner of the catering service, Aiken's Finest Catered Affairs.

"What I'm finding is in America, we're dieting more, we're exercising more and taking more prescription drugs more than ever before," said Hubbs. "Yet we're overweight, our children are overweight, we're seeing medical doctors more often and developing more disease than ever."

"As long as you eat a balanced raw food diet, you are going to lose weight period,"
she said. "It's good because you don't have to count calories."

From: Crowds flock to annual Veggie Fest in Naperville

From The raw food diet: yum or glum?

...according to nutritional advisor and wellbeing coach Barbara Louvrou (thewellworks.co.uk), eating like this is likely to be one of the most nutritious diets we can have.

"Food in its natural state is packed with all the nutrients which are often lost in the cooking process,' says Barbara. 'Heating also causes harmful changes in the chemical constituency of food, such as the production of acrylamide – a toxic carcinogenic substance, so people who prefer a raw food diet are avoiding these."

From Raw foodists tout benefits for health, environment

"It's interesting to think that our No. 1 use of energy consumption, even more than transportation,
is cooking our food," he said. "The No. 1 thing we put in our landfills is food packaging.
So if you're eating raw food, such as bananas on a bunch, you've eliminated both of those."

“When people ask me why I don’t eat meat or any other animal products, I say, ‘Because they’re unhealthy, and they’re the product of a violent and inhumane industry,’

“Chickens, cows, and pigs in factory farms spend their whole lives in filthy, cramped conditions—only to die a prolonged and painful death. Their bodies are then turned into food products proven to contribute to heart disease and cancer. To eat that is to eat poison.”

Less meat, more oil

Nick Kyriazi, Deutschtown
Thursday, May 24, 2007

In the "Saturday Essay" by Gery Steighner ("What about oil shale?" May 19 and PghTrib.com), Steighner says

"For the foreseeable future, the U.S. will continue to need lots of oil in order to maintain our standard of living.

That is not true. We need lots of oil in order to maintain our particular standard of living.

If we changed two things -- eliminated suburban development that requires automobiles and stopped eating animal products, the production of which is extreme in its inefficiency -- our standard of living would be just as high (in fact, it would increase along with our quality of life) but we would need only a fraction of the oil we now need.

And all that needs to happen for both of those things to occur is for the government to stop subsidizing them both."

"The insult of marketing "Happy Cows" in California is no more than a deceptive lie. To be witness to the angry crying of the mothers, or the pathetically sad moans from the calve is to know and be haunted by an infinite sadness which all mammals share in similar circumstance."
- Robert Cohen

When men of his age were idling in theatres, shopping malls, restaurants and other entertainment spots, 19-year-old Suhas Gopinath, who heads a multinational company, is fighting for a noble cause — protection of animals.

He feels that it was the bounden duty of humans to protect innocent animals, many of which were on the path to extinction. In an interview to PETA India’s youth arm, Gopinath, CEO of Global Inc, said,

“As humans, we need to have some morality and ethics to give back to those innocent creatures from which we have taken and exploited for our comforts and needs."

As early as 1927, a comprehensive study conducted by Dr. J. Shirley Sweeney,[3] demonstrated that the high fat, low carbohydrate diet used in treating diabetic patients would cause diabetes in normal people. Dr. Sweeney also found that when those who had blood sugar levels indicative of diabetes changed their diets from a high fat or high protein diet to a high carbohydrate diet, their diabetes disappeared!

Dr. Sweeney concluded that, “If you want a quick case of diabetes, just eliminate the carbohydrates from your diet for a couple of days and then take the test. It will demonstrate diabetes.”

"I don't consider myself a terrorist, but the Earth is being terrorized by corporate greed..."

Christopher McIntosh speaking to U.S. District Judge Thomas Zilly

Zilly told McIntosh the world is not perfect, and acknowledged that we "might not be treating Mother Earth with the care that is appropriate." But the judge went on to say that unless society adheres to the rule of law, "Mother Earth will not survive."

For example, growing crops to feed farm animals requires massive amounts of water and land. Nearly half of the water and 80 percent of the agricultural land in the United States is used to raise animals for food, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

From the article:
The Cancer Guy
Will you people just please eat your frickin' vegetables?

Quotes from Dr. Michael Greger:

"The best way to fight cancer is to avoid exposure to carcinogens like pesticides. And the best way to do that is to eat a “plant-based diet.”

“Pork, beer, chicken, cheese and fish are the highest sources of dioxin here in the United States,”

“Dioxins are stored in animal fat and the higher you go up the food chain the more concentrated the levels are... Meat eaters just seem to be oozing carcinogens from their bodies.”

Fact of Interest

From:

All you need to know about milk

By Angela Epstein, Daily Mail
30th November 2004

Milk: Health drink or deadly danger?

Once, it was known as the ultimate health drink. Packed with vitamins and minerals such as calcium and phosphorous, as well as all the essential food groups, milk was considered the perfect way to boost well-being in a glass.

Over recent years, however, scientific evidence has linked different types of milk to a variety of health scares. Only this week, Swedish researchers declared that drinking more than one glass of milk a day could double the risk of contracting ovarian cancer.

[SoyStache note: the above article incorectly states "Only tinned pilchards and sardines eaten with their bones provide more calcium weight for weight than milk does." According to data we've gathered from the Federal nutrition websites, the first cow's milk listed is at least 40 from the top on the calxium list! See: http://www.soystache.com/calcium.htm ]

Plant foods to the rescue
By Liz Szabo, USA TODAY
, 8/10/2004

From the above article comes these four quotes:

"Humans evolved to depend on a rich diet of 800 plant foods, says David Heber, director of the University of California-Los Angeles Center for Human Nutrition. Today, he says, most people eat three, and those are often french fries, ketchup and iceberg lettuce."

"Scientists have identified only a handful of the thousands of potentially beneficial plant chemicals, says Daniel Nixon, author of The Prostate Health Program and president of the Institute for Cancer Prevention in New York. People who would rather pop dietary supplements instead of eating the real thing may miss out on proven health promoters such as fiber, as well as compounds that scientists have yet to discover, Nixon says."

"Humans grew to depend on fruits, vegetables and nuts to provide these vital defenses. That may explain why, without a rich plant diet, people are more vulnerable to disease."

"Mother Nature is cleverer than all of us and has laced many of our favorite foods with things that can be helpful," Li says. "Ancient cultures have long recognized that your diet can be healing, and scientists are only now beginning to understand why."

'Sound science' should guide other nations in reviving U.S. beef imports, official says

04/07/04

WASHINGTON -- With U.S. beef still blocked from top export markets, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said Tuesday she has employed "sound science" to pressure foreign governments to reconsider how they deal with mad cow disease.

[SoyStache: How sound is the "science" of NOT testing over 30,000,000 cows a year for mad cow disease, while they may have the disease and suggesting they are safe? And why "pressure" countries to accept the meat from those animals?]

Ravi Chand

Chand tells KTOK they want to show people that vegetarians are generally slimmer and sexier than those who, "gnaw on the corpses of tortured animals."  He says eating meat clogs arteries, makes people fat and damages organs.

Beef lobby blocks action on mad cow, activists say

"BSE is not passed from animal to animal," he said. "It's what this animal ate four years, five years ago. It is not `where did the meat from that animal go?' What about all the meat from all the other animals that ate the same infected feed so many years ago? That's the concern."

Beef industry again upset by figure in Oprah case

Betsy Blaney, Jan. 25, 2004
Associated Press

AMARILLO, Texas - The central figure in Oprah Winfrey's legal fight with cattle ranchers outraged many in beef country six years ago with his prediction that sloppy meat production practices all but guaranteed mad cow's arrival in the United States.

With the first domestic occurrence of mad cow disease in December, Howard Lyman is again upsetting the beef industry.

Lyman, a former Montana rancher-farmer turned vegetarian, said the discovery validates his concerns about how cattle are raised and slaughtered to produce tons of meat each year. His comments on Winfrey's show in 1996 prompted a lawsuit by Texas cattlemen, who lost.

"I wish it had never happened, but you see somebody driving toward a cliff at 200 mph and they won't step on the brake, you can pretty well figure out what they're going to do," said Lyman, who now lives in Alexandria, Va.

Mad cows in a world gone mad

The role of animal fats and meat in these conditions has been overwhelmingly established. As Neal Barnard, M.D., president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, has declared,
"The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters and all automobile accidents combined."

Disturbing information!

The US supposedly tests ALL downed cows and other cows that have shown physical symptoms of disease. NBC Nightly News mentioned 12/24/03 that 1% of all slaughtered cows are "downed" cows. If January through November 2003 has seen 32,900,000 slaughtered cows, which means the US should have tested 327,900 and the US has only tested 20,526, then they have only tested about 6% of downed cows!!! That means about 307,374 cows that were unable to stand or walk, but shipped to processing plants, were never tested! (Might "downed cows" shipped to slaughter also include dead cows?)

WHAT'S UP WITH THAT???

"I'm a vegetarian - I think there's a strong possibility, had I not become a vegetarian, I would not be working now. I became a vegetarian about 25 years ago, and I did it out of concern for animals. But I immediately began having more energy and feeling better."

"Yoffe explains, 'Eating animal protein, which is high in sulfur-containing amino acids, requires the body to buffer the effects of those amino acids. It does so by releasing calcium from the bones, literally peeing them away.'"

From: CyberParent

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, professor of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University, says "the correlation between animal protein [intake] and fracture rates is as strong as that between lung cancer and smoking."

From Scoop (9/26/03):

According to Dr John Livesey, a scientific officer at Christchurch Hospital, “If the world human population became vegetarian, there would be huge international environmental benefits.

Heard recently regarding an article on raw foods: [8/03]

"I always have to chuckle at the inevitable disclaimer, "talk to your health adviser before making any major dietary change". Right. How many people in the general public call their doctors at 7 p.m. and say, "Hey, Doc, I'm going to order a jumbo pizza with all the toppings and the stuffed crust tonight. Then I'm going to eat the whole thing, wash it down with a six-pack of Coke/beer, and watch TV all night. Is that OK??" Maybe the pizza ads should have a disclaimer on them as well, something like, "be sure to check with your health provider about the wisdom of eating a diet high in saturated fats, calories, cholesterol, salt, and watching TV all night so you'd see this ad in the first place"!"

Human activities give rise to new diseases

03 June 2003
By David Suzuki

Quote from David Suzuki:

"When we practice intensive livestock farming and feed herbivores to herbivores, we create ideal conditions for the spread of disease. As we change the climate, we create new vectors for disease to spread. The growth of international trade and travel further increases the capacity for diseases to flourish. "

From Canada.com

"The real causes of osteoporosis are the five factors that leach calcium from the bones: animal protein, caffeine, sodium, tobacco and sedentary lifestyle," says committee president Dr. Neal D. Barnard, who is taking to task the dairy industry's No. 1 health claim.

PCRM's nutrition director, Amy Lanou, Ph.D., regarding the "baby neglect trial."

"With all the information now available about the long-term health benefits of plant-based diets, there is really no question that the vegan diet is safe-in fact, it offers the most disease-fighting protection of any dietary pattern."

From CNN.com:/Education, 3/3/03

"I consider dairy milk to be one of the most unhealthy beverages promoted toward children," said Jackie Domac, a teacher and health department chairwoman at Venice High School in Los Angeles. "In many ways it's worse than soda. It's full of antibiotics, hormones, saturated fat and cholesterol, none of which our students need.

"Well, we could tell people to become vegetarians," he added. "If we were truly basing this only on science, we would, but it is a bit extreme."

"Death, pain, and torture, by any other name, cannot sanitize the great injustice we do to animals."

Robert Cohen, Sun, 03 Feb 2002

"God bless America and its children who continue to be poisoned by those whose bottom line does not include health and safety."

Quote by Robert Cohen (notmilk.com) in reference to Congress not allowing the public to know what we are eating:

"Last year, Senator Barbara Boxer sponsored a bill that intended to give Americans the right to know what they were eating. Foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) would have carried a label. Senator Boxer could not find one other senator to co-sponsor her bill."

Here are recent comments from Robert Cohen's Newsletter (http://www.notmilk.com)

Dear Friends,

"Last night, I made a resolution to work harder this year. Each time I go the extra yard in helping somebody, I create a tiny ripple in an enormous ocean. Please observe closely the next time you throw a rock into a lake or ocean. It's always a bulls-eye! Create enough ripples, and one makes waves. Resolve to make waves. Together we can erode ignorance, and change our landscape for the better."
